When a factor alters a patients symptoms, for better or worse, it is defined as a modality. When the symptoms of disease become worse it is known as an aggravation (amelioration improving of symptoms). A modality aggravation is when the patients symptoms worsen from sickness or disease in the way they, as individuals, specifically get worse. The types of modalities are; physical, temperature(climatical), time, dietary, localized, and miscellaneous. Example of this is when a patient has a fever and feels worse in the morning, worse in cold weather, worse laying down on left side, etc. This is not alone a symptom. Every patient can react to sickness in different ways which helps paint a full picture of the patients symptoms in a whole. Homeopathic aggravations are when the patients symptoms become worse (aggravated) because of the remedy. This remedy is prescribed on the law of similars, inducing an artificial disease which is stronger than the patients disease. The two can not co-exist. Complications, in the form of aggravations, may occur if the remedy and potency is poorly chosen. The patient’s body systems may also not have a good first impression of the remedy. A homeopathic aggravation may also symbolize the medicine is active and properly working in a positive manner. This is true if Hering’s Law Of Direction Of Cure is followed. In Conclusion, the main difference between the two is that a modality aggravation is caused by the illness and the homeopathic aggravation caused by the remedy.
